Living in the Natural Environment 2024 – The Land Supports Us All

Those living in the agricultural/rural and rural fringe community are constantly facing new challenges. They are challenged by the environment and in turn, the environment can be challenged by them. Living in the Natural Environment is an annual forum that brings together our rural population of agricultural and non-agricultural residents to discuss topics of interest.
There will once again be a trade show area where non-profit organizations and forum sponsors will have an opportunity to meet with attendees and chat about their organizations.
This year’s presentations will be on:
Interior Salish Fire Keeper
For thousands of years Indigenous people used fire as a tool to shape the environment. By doing this,
improvements were made to animal habitat, forage food, medicine security and fuel loading in the forest was controlled. At certain times of the year fire was applied to the land on a large scale and this knowledge was passed down from generation to generation, until it became illegal to burn about a century ago. Now the forest is categorized as Wildland, it is unnatural, over stocked, over aged, sick and dying, and the fuel loading along with climate change makes for catastrophic fires. One way to lessen the fuel load in a cost-effective manner is to re-introduce Indigenous use of fire and Cultural Burning.
Pig Problems: Managing Wild Boar at Large in Alberta
Alberta is currently under threat from many invasive species, including feral pigs (wild boar at large). This presentation will dive into the subject of invasive species, the history of wild boar at large in Alberta, the risks and threats they pose to our environment and economy, what is being done and what you can do to help.
