Living Sustainably Speaker Series II – November 2023 thru April 2024

The Cochrane Environmental Action Committee (CEAC) is excited to present, Living Sustainably Series II, the second series of presentations for Cochrane area residents. Topics for Series II will include Coexisting with Wildlife (November 2023), Home Energy Retrofit (February), Birding 101 (March), and Invasive Species (April).

These information sessions are free to attend but registration is required.

Session 01 | Coexisting with Wildlife (Past Event)

Learn about our local biodiversity, including societal benefits, some common misconceptions, and how to be a good neighbour to local wildlife.

Speaker: Kennedy Halvorson (she/her) MES, BSc Biochemistry , Conservation Specialist with Alberta Wilderness Association.

The Cochrane Ecological Institute (CEI) and Calgary Wildlife will also be available to answer questions after the presentation.

Session 02 | Home Energy Retrofits (Past Event)

This session will feature two speakers to provide you with the basic information required to understand and assess options for your home energy retrofit.

Heat Pumps 101: There has been a lot of controversy as to whether heat pumps are appropriate for Alberta , especially during cold snaps. Learn about this exciting technology from one of Calgary’s leading heating and air conditioning companies. What are the misconceptions? What size and model should you consider? How much does a system cost? What is the typical payback? These are some of the points we will review. | Speaker: Matthew Kramer with Horizon Heating.

EnerGuide Evaluations, Canada Greener Home Grants, and Loans: Have you ever wondered how energy efficient your home was? What renovations would make the most impact? How to get an energy assessment? Have you heard about the $5000 Greener Homes Grant or the $40,000 interest free loans from the federal government? | Speaker: Gino Furano, energy advisor with VerdaTech Energy Management & Consulting Inc.

Session 03 | Birding 101 (Past Event)

Did you know that there are over 438 bird species in Alberta? At this session you will get a basic introduction to birding, learn all about the many species of birds you can see in Cochrane and where you can spot them. You will also learn how to track your sightings (i.e.: eBird, iNaturalist)

Speaker: Kirsten Pearson (birder extraordinaire) will also be sharing her birding knowledge; for the past several years she has coordinated the annual Cochrane Bird Count, held every year in late December.

Session 04 | Invasive Species (Upcoming)

The fourth and final session of this speaker series will focus on flora and fauna invasive species in and around Cochrane – and there are many – Canada thistle, yellow clematis, baby’s breath, and the notorious creeping bell flower, to name just a few.  

At this session you will learn about:

  • Invasive species found in the Cochrane area
  • How to identify
  • Proper removal and disposal

Speaker: Jade Patterson from Blooming Bee Gardening specializes in creating and maintaining water sustainable gardens that promote the growth of plants native to the area. Their eco-friendly practices and use of sustainable materials are designed to reduce the impact on the environment, while creating beautiful and functional gardens that support local ecosystems.
