Learn to Fly Fish
JUNE FLY FISHING CLASSES AND HANDS-ON
Always wanted to learn how to fly fish? Join us for a full day fly fishing course that will teach you the basics – and get you fishing. The morning will be an “in-class” session to provide the basics of the many aspects of fly fishing. After a break for lunch (bring your own), we’ll travel to Mitford Pond in Cochrane for practice before an hour of actual fishing!
Dates: June 16, 17, 23 24, 2018
Morning: 9:00 am to 12 Noon in the CLUBHOUSE, Town of Cochrane, Bighill Springs Creek Picnic Area
Afternoon: Mitford Ponds in Cochrane until about 3:30 pm Fly fishing for Trout (Rainbow and Brown). Alberta Fishing Licence required for Adults (16 – 65 years)

COVERS:
Assessing and assembling Fly Fishing equipment: rods, reels, backing, type of lines and tapered leaders. Knots for tying flies to the leader. Discussion and showing of hooks and flies (nymphs, dry, wet, streamers) used in fly fishing. Describing the vital ‘weight’ notation of rods, reels, and fly lines. The use of spinning tackle for fly fishing will be presented.
Identification of Native Alberta Sport fishes as well as introduced Sport fishes in Alberta. Description of important fish families amongst our present fishery. Aquatic and terrestrial insects as natural food for fish in Alberta.
Learn to cast a fly with Fly Fishing tackle. Initially fly casting practice on the lawns near the Clubhouse then an actual fly fishing session at the trout-stocked Mitford Ponds in Cochrane.
A take-home Manual will be provided to enrollees to describe the above. Colour photos to Alberta Sports Fish along with coloured photos aquatic insects and terrestrial insects will be illustrate the fishery. A selection of fly fishing flies will be available for use in the School sessions. A list of fly fishing equipment and accessories will also be provided in the Manual.
